Our guest for lunch tomorow will be Skye Thieten, Michigan Lead for Be Smart for Kids. Be SMART is a national, nonprofit education campaign designed to help parents and adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries. The Be SMART framework is designed the SMART acronym: Secure all guns in your home and vehicles, Model responsible behavior around guns, Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes, Recognize the role of guns in suicide, Tell your peers to be SMART.
Parking for Xemplars attending the luncheon tomorrow is kindly provided by our good friends at Heeney Sundquist in their safe zone parking lot to the north of Cowley's Pub. See you there!
On Deck: Annette Compo & CBD
Join us next week to learn about Cannabidiol (CBD). You may see it touted as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee. But what exactly is CBD and why is it so popular? CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. One of hundreds of components in marijuana, CBD does not cause a "high" by itself. CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but there is limited scientific evidence so far. It has demonstarted effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and, in some cases, stop them altogether. Epidiolex, which contains CBD, is the first cannabis-derived medicine approved by the FDA for these conditions. Sounds interesting. Bring Twinkies or Doritos just in case.
Give Back, Be Xemplar.
